![]() As the pen held by a right handed writer passes through the circle of the round letters, it naturally forms the tilted axis.Īs the scribe finishes each stroke, his pen naturally creates the little serifs, or ending strokes on the letters as he moves to the next letter. The three characteristics of the humanist typefaces I listed are all due to one influence: the way the calligrapher’s flat-edged pen forms letters. But it’s true.ĭespite the smoothness that Bembo shows on the page, a look at the enlarged version above tells us a great deal about its origins. Or that the pages of today’s bestseller might contain traces of the scholars of the Renaissance, the same scholars who rediscovered and reissued the books of antiquity 500 years ago. It may seem odd that our modern digital type fonts derive from models that are ancient. The earliest type creators and printers of the fifteenth century used as models the books that were handwritten by scribes practicing a craft that was-even then-hundreds of years old. These oldstyle typefaces were modeled on humanistic calligraphy. The difference between the thin strokes and the thick strokes is not that great. An axis drawn through the thinnest part of the round letters will lean to the left. The serifs are bracketed: there’s a curved connection between the serif and the stem of the letter. That means that: (see the illustrations that correspond to each number) It’s easy on the eyes even for extended reading, and it seems plain and without any eccentricities.īembo is an oldstyle typeface. One of the reasons I prize Bembo for book typography is the way it smoothly flows on the page. ![]() With the Russian army currently defending a 600-mile front, he writes, “they cannot be strong everywhere.” As a consequence, “the Ukrainians just have to find a weak spot and punch through it.” There’s a term for that: It’s called cashing a check before it clears.Įven so, for Boot, the operational imperative appears obvious. The optimism voiced throughout Western quarters stems in significant part from a belief that new weapons systems promised to but not yet actually fielded by Ukraine - Abrams tanks and F-16 fighter jets, for example - will have a decisive impact on the battlefield. For either Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or Joe Biden to suppose that they’re exempt from its provisions would be daring indeed.īoot is hardly alone in expecting the much-hyped Ukrainian operation - with June upon us, will it become a summer counteroffensive? - to break the months-long stalemate. So too, assuming he’s still sentient, can Vladimir Putin. Bush for one can certainly testify to the truth of that dictum. As Winston Churchill put it in one of his less well-remembered “always remember” axioms: “The Statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.” The fact is that the good guys don’t necessarily win. ![]() Yet the long history of warfare sounds a distinctly cautionary note. Well, all I can say is: from Boot’s prayerful lips to God’s ear.Ĭourageous Ukrainians certainly deserve to have their stalwart defense of their country rewarded with success. “In the past, such talk may have contained a large element of bravado and wishful thinking, but now it is a product of hard-won experience.” From his vantage point in a downtown hotel, Boot reports that “continued Russian attacks on urban areas are only making Ukrainians angrier at the invaders and more determined to resist their onslaught.” Meanwhile, “the Kremlin appears to be in disarray and mired in the blame game.” “That’s how confident they are.” He shares their confidence. While Boot was there, Ukrainians repeatedly assured him that they would cruise to ultimate victory. “From my vantage point in a hotel room in the center of Kyiv,” he writes, “the whole attack was no big deal - just a matter of losing a little sleep and hearing some loud thumps,” as air defenses provided by Washington did their work. With the front “only about 360 miles away,” Kyiv is a “bustling, vibrant metropolis with traffic jams and crowded bars and restaurants.” Better yet, most of the residents who fled that city when the Russians invaded in February 2022 have since returned home.Īnd despite what you might read elsewhere, incoming Russian missiles are little more than annoyances, as Boot testifies from personal experience. ![]() ![]() Something akin to normalcy prevails and the mood is remarkably upbeat. In a recent column reported from the Ukrainian capital - headline: “I was just in Kyiv under fire” - Boot writes that actual signs of war there are few. And as it happens, he’s positively bullish about the prospect of Ukraine handing Russia a decisive defeat in its upcoming, widely anticipated, sure-to-happen-any-day-now spring counteroffensive. Whenever that Washington Post columnist professes optimism about some upcoming bloodletting, misfortune tends to follow. ( ) – Allow me to come clean: I worry every time Max Boot vents enthusiastically about a prospective military action. ![]() ![]() Sue Warren, Brand and Marketing Manager of Bury St Edmunds and Beyond – the town’s tourism brand, said: “This is such a fantastic addition to our most visited visitor attraction in Bury St Edmunds. The reconstruction is one of the largest and most complex reconstruction that English Heritage has completed of one of its sites. This information, combined with meticulous research, enabled the team at English Heritage to create the initial detailed sketches of the lost abbey which were then developed into a 3D digital model of the abbey complex, with a final layer of historical detail added to create the finished artwork visitors can see today. Work began on digitally reconstructing the abbey in early 2021 with the entire site surveyed a large collection of stonework from the abbey – which is held in English Heritage’s stores and at Moyse’s Hall Museum - was also analysed. Finally, a 3D model of the site, pre-Reformation, has been refurbished and restored by the original model-maker Nigel Purdy. ![]() Striking new artwork which digitally reconstructs and re-imagines the abbey in its heyday depicts the size and grandeur of the site, helping those walking among the ruins interpret the site’s remains, and see it as it would have been at various points in the last millennium. This importance was ultimately its downfall and during the dissolution of the monasteries Henry VIII had the Abbey demolished to demonstrate his power and control.īut now thirteen new panels bring the fascinating history of the abbey to life, and highlight the story of the martyred King Edmund who was buried in the abbey church, aiding visitors’ understanding of the site’s historic importance. Named after the martyred King Edmund the abbey was a place of pilgrimage, and around 1066 was ranked fourth among English abbeys in wealth and political importance. With over 1 million visitors in 2020, the Abbey Gardens and Ruins is one of the most visited free attractions outside of London*, however, while the remains of the abbey are extensive, they do little justice to what was once one of the largest and grandest monasteries in England. The new scheme by English Heritage, the charity that cares for the historic site, reveals its fascinating past and marks 1,000 years since the founding of the abbey.
